Joe’s Place (Emergency Shelter)

Joe’s Place Emergency Shelter currently operates 24/7, 365 days per year. This is a low barrier shelter providing 40 beds for persons that may be under the influence of alcohol or drugs and require access to food and shelter. The initial objective of this shelter was to provide a safe space for vulnerable people as a result of the COVID19 pandemic, and has continued to operate in order to meet the continued demand for shelter beds.

For more information about this Emergency Shelter, please see the Joe's Place Info Sheet. This Who To Call sheet provides a list of contacts for addressing any concerns related to Joe’s Place.

BC Housing has approved permanent funding of this program, effective April 1, 2023.

Along with providing beds and basic amenities such as showers and laundry, Joe’s Place provides regular daily meals made on site, as well as a common area that includes tables, seating, activities, and a tribute to the program’s namesake, Joseph Keeler.

We teamed up with BC Housing to share why Joe’s Place is so important to our community.

I started couch surfing at first, then I had gotten into recreational drugs that slowly became less recreational. I started camping out until winters came then it was off to the shelter. Thanks to KSAN Society that ran the shelters I was able to [get] a hot meal and shower. […]I was able to touch base with the workers from both KSAN and ICMT and was able to get into a treatment centre […]. I came home back to the shelter after other housing fell through and they took me in with open arms. I was working and staying clean so they offered me supportive housing […]. Since then, I have been able to find work, reach out to friends and help them, have safe available housing, and stay clean while working at and staying on top of my mental health[…]. Long story short KSAN, ICMT and the homeless initiatives and supports work.
