Food Security Programs

Ksan Society's  Northern Fresh Food Project encompasses a number of programs andNorthern Fresh Food Project logo projects.  It is a broad community project which not only addresses food security issues in the community but aims to reduce the dependence on fresh produce from outside the local growing area.

Through a network of helping agencies, and spearheaded by Kalum Horseshoe Society,  a local food recovery program - Food Share Terrace -  takes healthy and usable surplus food and redirects it to agencies which support and assists marginalized families in the community.  Participation by local businesses actively demonstrates their social conscience while helping alleviate some of the hunger in the community.

Ksan's first Community Greenhouse was built in the fall of 2009 behind the Terrace Emergency Shelter.  The 20' x 60' steel frame/polycarbonate structure was funded totally by donations.  Greenhouse day to day operation sees volunteers from the community at large work side by side with clients of the Society.

The overall intent of the greenhouse component is to see 50% of the produce sold, thus enabling the remaining 50% to be given to helping agencies to redirect to people and families in need.
